Hair Loss – Common External Culprits

Some people will say that male pattern baldness is an eventuality for all of us. And whilst it is true that nearly all of the population will experience at least thinning hair if not actual baldness, there are external forces that we often do not think about which make hair loss more of a problem if you are not careful.

Haircare products are one of the most overlooked yet most prominent causes of hair loss in men, which is ironic when considering the word ‘care’ features in the name. Gel, wax, clay, oil and pomade are all widely used by men to style and shape the house. And in moderation, there is no problem with this. Nobody has a perfect hairstyle day in, day out, so a little bit of gel here, a sweep back with some wax there… it all helps. Over time, though, these products, if used daily, block the hair follicles which need air, light and nutrients to stay alive and continue producing hair. Constant blockages will simply tell the head to stop producing hair in those areas. Suddenly a cowlick or a quiff just became a potential widow’s peak.

Dye is another common. Again, in moderation, dying our hair is fine and helps us change things up. But the way in which Di works is via stripping the hair, often via corrosive substances. It is not good for hair to get used to being continually hit with burning chemicals, and over time, how will thin out or just cease production in commonly hit areas.

Baseball caps or any other head gear may not directly cause baldness, but they do prevent air and light from reaching the hair and follicles, as well as causing greasy build-up due to moisture inside the hat. Wearing a hat in moderation increases the health of the hair we have.

Letting our dyed hair grow out fully before re-dying it, for instance, and washing pomades out of our hair as soon as we no longer need it are all commonsense steps. Look after your hair and it will serve you well.
