There are a few things that are guaranteed in this world and one of them is that we will all age over time. Whilst we do all show the signs of ageing differently (some better, some worse) there are some things that we can do that do not require medical intervention and will help us age better.
Firstly, the number one mistake that people make is to not hydrate appropriately. When we do not take in enough water, our skin will suffer and will dry out quicker. Dry skin wrinkles far quicker over time than healthy skin. But there are also other reasons to get our suggested eight glasses of water in per day. Our body, internally, relies on water. Our brain functions better when fully hydrated, our blood flow is improved and our internal organs do not have to work as hard. Many cases of kidney stones, for instance, are credited to long-term dehydration which causes ammonia and urea crystals to form. Water equals healthy, glowing skin.
We also need to take a stand early on against sun and UV damage. Unfortunately, many of the older generation now were not warned appropriately in the past and cases of skin cancer and other epidermal complaints are testament to that. Not only is it sensible to avoid excessive exposure to sunlight, but also using sunblock is key. Bear in mind also that damage skin leads to an increased cancer risk not just in the burnt areas but also over the rest of the body. It is perfectly possible to get skin cancer in areas that never suffered sunburn, as a result of spending too long catching rays.
These are just two examples of things that we need to do to ensure healthy skin that does not age prematurely. And remember that what is going on outside is magnified inside. If we look healthy and visibly take care of ourselves, the chances are increased that our internal workings are also ageing well. It’s all well and good looking like we have beaten the clock, but our bodies actually need to do so.
